Ninfee Water Lilies by Giorgio Armani S/S 2014

Ninfee Water Lilies - Enchanted, suspended visions of gardens at the beginning of time, where stretches of calm or rippling water reflect shadows of plants, flowers and clouds. This is the legendary natural scene that inspires the new Giorgio Armani collection, which through the use of colours and elementary shapes conjures up a symbolic modernity. Poised between realism and abstraction, Giorgio Armani suggests an evocative future in which nature is reflected in the rigors of high technology.

For spring, that includes, among others, tropical prints, sheer fabrics, and unconventional options for black tie. Armani addressed the first theme with soft or abstract blooms that were overall easier than many of the South American or Hawaiian varieties that have popped up elsewhere. The designer painted soft coral anemones across minimal jackets with peplums, and cut trapeze dresses and lightweight coats from a pink-and-turquoise embroidered lace. His take on transparency, for the most part, was particularly and refreshingly wearable. Chiffon shells were painted with brushstrokes, and multilayered soft skirts hit right at the knee. As for what to wear for evening, Armani offered up antidotes to the long, mermaid dress epidemic that’s hit the red carpet including last month’s Emmy Awards telecast and showed only short looks including a patterned, voluminous top paired with a matching skirt and beaded strapless smocks.

'Elbaz called it “an homage to fabric,” he was inspired by the shafts of light in a Florentine textile workshop that illuminated thousands of brightly colored bobbins being woven into cloth of alchemical beauty, a painstakingly laborious process that is increasingly endangered. Elbaz took these very traditional fabrics, “and gave them a workout stonewashed them, crushed them,” to soften and modernize their texture and feel.'
