H&M Teams Up With Alexander Wang

H&M announced yesterday during an event at the Coachella Music Festival, in Palm Springs, California, USA, that their next designer collaboration will be with Alexander Wang. This partnership marks the first time that an American designer teams up with H&M on the much anticipated designer collaboration.

The New York based Fashion Designer’s eponymous brand has firmly established itself by perpetually evolving and re-contextualizing the urban uniform, since it was launched on the runway in 2007. Alexander Wang’s core sensibility is a reflection on contrasts, blending seamlessly between the refined and the imperfect. His collections have an unprecious outlook on fashion, and always reflect a sense of ease. The Alexander Wang x H&M collection will feature apparel and accessories for women and men. Typical for his irreverent approach, Alexander Wang will propose a new take on the lifestyle product offering that goes beyond fashion. The full collection will be available in 250 H&M stores worldwide, and online starting November 6, 2014.
Alexander Wang says, “I am honored to be a part of H&M’s designer collaborations. The work with their team is an exciting, fun process. They are very open to push boundaries and to set a platform for creativity. This will be a great way for a wider audience to experience elements of the Alexander Wang brand and lifestyle.”
"Alexander Wang is one of the most important voices in fashion today. He understands exactly what people want to wear and does it with an energy and passion that’s infectious. It feels incredible to be collaborating with him this year,” says Margareta van den Bosch, H&M’s creative advisor.

Alexander Wang Fall/Winter 2014/15 Collection

It just so happens that Alexander Wang had been studying weather patterns in preparation for fall 2014, and the opening moments of the show were set to rolling claps of thunder and lightning.
“We started thinking a lot about extreme conditions and the great outdoors like, mountain climbing and camping,” he said before the show. “It was really about taking that idea of survival to an urban landscape.”

The opening look, a V-neck tunic dress over a high-neck rubberized leather button-down came with the kind of pockets you’d expect to find on the back of a Navy Seal; and that’s even before you counted the compartment at the side of those fantastic resistant waders, boots almost tall enough to stand their ground in the event of a Category 1 storm.

LoL, Andrea

As Wang pointed out, the pockets were designed to carry not rounds of ammunition, but the accoutrements of a cool girl: “her cigs, her cell phone, her lighter,” he said. The bags that looked like vintage hip flasks came with moving parts, so essentially a woman can build her own survival kit. The outdoorsy reference came through in more subtle ways, too, along the unfinished hemline of a shearling jacket arguably this season’s answer to the ubiquitous biker which had the rugged edges of a snow-topped mountainscape. On the flip side of that were sartorial flourishes of the dandy, and silk neckties and button-downs were a nice counterpoint to all the utilitarian weather-ready elements.

It’s strange to think that the phrase polar vortex has been trending for less than a month or so, but its impact on our world much less our wardrobes in the coming years, is very real. The show’s grand finale, which featured a series of models dressed in black jackets that showed splashes of hypercolor after being exposed to a conveyor belt of heaters, was certainly a spectacular reminder of that. As far as taking fashion’s temperatures goes, Wang continues to show his unfailing ability for forecasting what’s hot and what’s cool.
